Abstract

Joining of dissimilar metals such as aluminium to steel is a desired possibility for design engineers. Several difficulties arise, however, when these combinations are joined. The difficulties include the formation of brittle intermetallic phases, different thermal expansion coefficients and problems associated with the selection of joining technique. In this project at the KIMAB Joining Technology Centre, a literature study was performed on this area. Experimental trials were selected and performed with Laser and MIG-brazing of aluminium AA5052 to the hot dip galvanised carbon steel Dogal 220 RP and the stainless steel LDX 2101. The results show that the joint tensile strength could reach similar strength values as for welded AA5052. Although, narrow process windows and brittle fracture when the joints are loaded in bending mode are major concerns that need to be investigated further.
