Single Sided Joining Methods — A Feasibility Study

Abstract

The needs for single sided joining processes are increasing, especially in the automotive industry. If a single sided joining process that gives acceptable properties can be found, there are several advantages from a design perspective. The ability to remove the flanges makes it possible to redesign and reduce the weight of the construction. It will also be possible to attach sheets onto closed sections such as hydroformed beams.

This work covers both well implemented joining methods like blind riveting but also the latest developed methods as the resistance spot welding system VarioPicker are mentioned. Processes with a medium industrial maturity as plasma spot welding and Bolzensetzen are used in the industry, but only to a small degree. Laser welding is a common single sided technology and is heavily deployed in the automotive industry.

The project is mainly a literature survey. Some initial tests were performed with the Plasma Spot Welding technique on press hardened boron sheets and DP600 sheets. Test results from the mechanical fastening technique Rivtac are also published.
